I have an original iphone 4 and whatever IOS it came with.

My wife is threatening to take the phone away from me if I don't get it set up to send text messages. I'm not sure what app I need to download to do this. I found the following document on Apple's site that explains how to do it but my phone doesn't have this app. There is no button on my screen that says "TEXT" of "SMS" on it. Where can I go to get this app, or am I out of luck without a newer version of IOS? (And unfortunately I don't have a way to update the OS in my phone.)

Check your carrier plan and make sure you are not paying per message as they tend to add up quickly.

The Green Icon, with the white "word balloon" is SMS/MMS/Texting. Open it, enter someones phone number (or get it from your Address Book), then simply type in the lower section and press the Green (or Blue) "Send Button".

That link is outdated, try this one:

Unfortunately I don't have IOS 5.
In my version of IOS I only seem to get messages from Apple through that app.

I need help on how to make calls...

I'll let my wife complain to you and then see if you think it is funny.

I don't usually see the phone bill when it comes in but I managed to notice recently that they are charging me $20/month for texting, something that I never requested, and on a device that apparently isn't capable of texting.

Okay, first of all since you have an iPhone 4 it is fully capable to send texts. Secondly you should update it to the latest operating system which is 5.1. To do this plug in your phone to your computer using the white USB cable that came with the phone. Depending on how your computer is set up iTunes should open automatically. If it doesn't start iTunes and once it finishes its startup process you should see a pop up telling you that there is an update for your phone. All you have to do is click accept or okay (I forgot exactly what it says) and the rest is done automatically.

Once the update is finished you should see a green icon called messages. That's all and that's it.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

My itunes is dedicated to my ipod. I don't want it to sync my music with my iphone.

You don't have to sync your music to your phone.

What do you mean it only gets messages from Apple? Apple doesn't send messages. If you are getting messages from your carrier, then those are texxt messages coming into the text message app. That is the right app, you just need to find the contact or type the number into the new message box.

If this thread continues the way it is going, it is liable to be closed.

if you want for $40 ill screen share with you and setup your iPhone for you:) plus explain how to use your iPhone inside out over the phone(or Skype) including syncing things you want and don't want on your iPhone. its better than getting made fun of over this forum. Seriously tho consider it ok?

It will take more no more than an hour.
