iPod i need ipod mini help...

My friends ipod is not working...lol

The symptoms is when she turns it on we get a folder with a ! mark on it. I tried hooking it up to my mac, but it just shows the battery icon but not filling up. Anyone know whats wrong with it? Thanks!
