VLC can make my audio/video files play very loud but every other application the max sound is sooo soft. How do I make it louder? I have the volume all the way up in Sys Prefs.

Is this a laptop or is it a desktop?
Are you using external speakers?
Leopard?

The more info the better

Turn up the volume on your speakers if you are using externals. Otherwise the speakers on all macs are pretty small, I suggest buying a pair of speakers for them. If you have speakers and both volumes are maxed out and it's STILL too soft, buy some new speakers.

Leopard.

The speakers will go plenty loud as VLC is more than loud enough at 100%. it's just OS X built in max is too low. Some things are soften than others and are really hard to hear.
no externals. I have some for my PC and I don't need two pair. ;)

If you need something to make your sound be louder/more crisp in iTunes then try SRS iWOW. It costs a little but it does good for iTunes atleast. Not sure how one can accomplish the same systemwide.

If your music/movies are too quiet at max volume, it's very likely they are just extremely low quality encodes.

If you ripped the music yourself, change your encoding settings in the iTunes preferences.

If you downloaded them, you're out of luck there. Paying for music and movies is worth it to get the quality you desire.

With apologies to the OP ;)
