I need to unlock an original iPhone - How?

I have no idea what I'm doing. Can someone lead/assist/guide me on how to do it. What I want is to use it with AT&T without a data package and apparently they don't allow that. My dad doesn't need/want data, just a better phone. iPhone it is.
