hi,

i'm a sound designer and music composer. three years ago, i bought my first powerbook. and since then, i have been working on it. but it's been a few months (since the beginning of the year) that i've been thinking of an upgrade.

i was planning to buy a powermac g5 2ghz / 2gbram with an 20" display and waited for the nab upgrades. well, i'm still waiting for them.
then i thought i should wait until the wwdc. oh yeah ! veni, vidi, but not vici !

i must be terribly stubborn: i still wanted to buy the holy powermac. so i waited for the uk refurbished shop to open today. i made up my mind: i was going to purchase it today !!!
so, i got there. they were selling a 2ghz powermac with a 25% discount. PERFECT !!!
i then compared a new setup with a previous generation one (g5 2ghz + 20" display + wireless mouse&keyboard), and guess what ?!... the new setup is £5 cheaper than the old one, and includes a larger hard drive, a newer cd/dvd drive, a quicker bus and a better video card !!!
the reason for that (i called the apple shop where a nice guy explained it to me) is that the 25% discount is on the g5 former price. the nice sales person also said that he wouldn't advice me to purchase a refurbished machine ?!!!

so today i tend to get paranoid and really feel that apple want to con us.
their machines are bloody expensive. and they're even worse than microsoft: with microsoft, you can still choose your hardware. whereas if i want to keep working on logic audio, i must buy a stupidly expensive piece of apple hardware !

knowing that design is definitely not the most important feature for me in a computer, could you please advice me what to do ? should i still buy a powermac ? should i wait for the next upgrade ? (when is it due ?) should i go for a pc ? (which brand ?) can i buy a mac in the us and import it into the uk ? (it's soooo cheaper in the usa due to the cheap dollar !!!) anyone has a plan to get second hand g5 in london, uk ? (please, don't mention ebay and all the frauds)
the major problem is that i need to upgrade quite soon... i need more cpu !!!

thanks for all your advice !
d.
