For a while now I’ve thought that it would be a great asset for Apple to surround the screen with a “lip” to help prevent expensive screen repairs. Well, I got my wish BUT now I see why Apple didn’t do this from the start. Or why they keep a model without the lip.

I now find swiping between my watch faces to be an unpleasant experience. If you don’t swap faces much, this won’t matter to you. But I keep various complications on different screens and didn’t use to think anything about going back and forth. The lip kind of gets in the way of that now.

This is an easy problem to solve of course. You just need to get in the habit of starting your swipe further in. Although, it’s going to take a little more focus and may take more time as you place your finger in just the right spot to start.

It’s not a dealbreaker or any kind of “gate”. For me, I’m going to be running or biking, not much time to be swiping back and forth.

But I now grudgingly admit that Apple made the right choice with the original design. The bulbous screens feel much nicer.

Jeez, they'll let ANY watch sport a Nike face these days. :D

(Looks good though)

I hear you on this one. I get why you'd want a lip to protect the screen (my 7 has some scuffs around it, for instance), but I do wish they had chamfered the lip edges. I also find swiping to be pretty unpleasant as the edge is quite sharp.

Thanks for posting this. Good to know.

Hopefully you don't get too many people offended by you posting this, and say "you are holding it wrong" ;)

Not an issue for me, and I have huge fingers. I just start the swipe inboard from the edge. Zero issues.

Yeah, found the same. But it’s not as seamless as doing it with the older design. It made me appreciate my Series 7 screen more.

Although, many people are griping about the thick bezel around the Ultra screen. This area makes side swiping easier. I think the raised lip is part of the reason for the black bezel around the screen.

I completely understand this for the opposite reason, the lip is actually preventing me from accidentally swiping to a different face. That said, if that was my intention, the lip would be annoying.

I agree 100% with the sentences I emphasized above. The swiping immediately felt weird to me, especially with the chamfered edge around the case. Feels sharp almost.

Yeah, if you’re the type of person who doesn’t like an iPhone case with a lip at the bottom to get in the way of your up swipe, you’re gonna hate the Ultra.

I had the same problem with the 1st gen Apple TV 4K remote. I tried getting a protective rubber case, but it impeded swiping.

Now my Apple Watch has a permanent lip. Ugh!

It’s just something different to get used to. I had to make a similar adjustment going from the iPhone 11 Pro to the 12 Pro.
