I've had the same e-mail account for the last fifteen years or so. When I add this account to the Mail app thingy, it attempts to download every e-mail I've ever had.

My ipod touch only receives mail from this account from the last 24 hours. Is there a way of doing this on mac?

I don't believe you can set a limit on Mail on OSX. Depending on your email provider they may offer an option to limit the number of messages in an IMAP folder which you would connect to via Mail.

Edit: what type of mail account is it?

Mail will only download something from your e-mail server once. After that, you should not have this issue. You can also set Mail to delete old e-mails from the server on a periodic basis. (Mine is set for 2 weeks).
