I ordered an iPhone 13 mini from a VZW store. I went to pick it up 12/30/2021 and the plastic was already removed from the box and the plastic was removed from the phone's screen. Now my guess is that they removed it to charge the device or to start the activation process, but for some reason I feel like it is a second hand phone. Is there anyway to investigate this?

When I got to Settings>Cellular, at the bottom it reads, "Last Reset: Dec 4, 2021 at 1:34 AM." Is that something to be concerned about?

When I go to the Settings>Cellular, the Call Time for the Current Period reads "1 Hour, 37 Minutes." I have only made a 20 minute phone call on this phone. Does the Current Period include my old phone?

Can I take this into Apple to see if there were any other phone numbers attached to this phone?

I am sorry for the paranoia. I don't have a lot of money and have no business spending it on iPhones, but I wanted to get a new phone after have a broken iPhone for 5+ years. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

It definitely sounds like that phone's been used. I'd take it back to where you bought it, rather than Apple, since it's most likely not Apple's fault.

It's perfectly okay to be concerned over the phone. However, I think you should take this up with the Verizon store rather than go directly to Apple. Voice your concerns to them politely and if necessary ask them to exchange the phone.

You probably should have said something when you picked it up if you had concerns. Verizon will probably exchange it for you but also charge a restocking fee.

There’s nothing wrong with the phone. People return brand new iPhones for lots of reasons.
The mini usually gets returned because the person doesn’t like the smaller screen or the battery doesn’t last as long as they’d like.

If you’ve got a Mac computer, get the Coconut Battery app and check out the number of load cycles on the battery. You’ll be able to see if it had been used significantly before you got it.

A few thoughts:

1. iPhone 13s don't have plastic wrap on the their boxes. Apple is going green and has done away with plastic wrap. Instead, there is a tearable tab that unseals the box. So lack of plastic wrap means nothing here. Did you open the box or did a Verizon rep?

2. If you are using the same account, then I think your cellular time is for the account, not the phone.

My opinion: If the phone looks new to you and you have a receipt for a new phone with full warranty coverage, I wouldn't bother exchanging it and having to set up a new phone. Chances are it's new. I think it would be illegal for Verizon to sell a used phone as new.

I would definitely take it back to the VZW store if it was used but I was wondering if the Apple store could check if it had been used previous to my purchase.

Thanks for the responses.

The time to bring up any questions or reservations you had with the phone was when you picked it up that way it never left the store.. Apple will do the same thing JPack advised you to do so going to them is a waste of time. Apple only supplied the phone to Verizon and Verizon sold it to you, Apple has nothing to do with what happens to the phone once it's in Verizon's hands..
