I-phone wont boot up

So my crazy mom dropped her 16GB 3GS in the toilet. She said it should be ok because she put it in rice immediately. I know, I know, just giving you the facts. Every bit of information of her friends is on the phone and she never backed it up. It wont power on by pushing the power button but when you plug it into the computer it powers up like a new phone and says connect to i-tunes. I-tunes then say's it needs to be restored and all info will be deleted. I'm wondering if there is some way to see if the data is still there and maybe back it up? Thanks in advance for your help!
The phone is not jail broke.

The only way is to 'manually' save your data (i.e. MediaMonkey for music, iPhoneExplorer for photos and other files...)

But I'm not sure if you need a jailbreak for this. just try...
