I Phone wont verify or sync and crashes itunes when connected

Basically, when i connect my i phone to Itunes on my mac it responds like normal and begins to verify. However it then simply stops and the beach ball appears. When this happens i am unable to interact with itunes unless i disconnect the iphone. :(
While this is all not happening, my iphone reads "sync in progress"


I have no idea what to do, and need advice. Could it have something to do with the 3.0 update?
