Is there a way without restoring to run a disk check? My step dads ipod quit working and final turned on and I would like to run a diagnostic utility on it to see if it is a disk error or something else. Thanks

When iPods successfully boot, they attempt a file system check. I don't know of a way to manually do a file system check, short of jailbreaking your iPod (not recommended). If you're really concerned about it, do a full backup and restore your iPod and your backup.
