I really don't understand this...

I've got Automatic Downloads turned on for Updates form iTunes and App Store settings, but my apps don't automatically update....

When I click into the app store, I often get a red badge app icon saying how many apps I've got waiting to update, and I've got to update them all.

Can anybody explain why this is?

Give it time..
It's done in such a way so as not to slow down your foreground Internet activity.
Usually, they're updated overnight, when your phone is charging, to maintain standby time as well.
If you need to confirm that they are, in fact, updating- try to manually hit the update button and you'll notice some progress has already been made.
