What I use my current iPhone 8 Plus on Apple Upgrade Program for:

Normal web browsing
Social media
Lots of YouTube
Photography
Watching Netflix (travel often for work)

I currently am about 49gb of a 64gb so I need to up my storage.

I am also looking to get the Apple Watch series 4 since I currently have a series 0.

I don’t want to spend an arm and a leg (my wife doesn’t get my tech obsession).

XR seems to be awesome for the price and battery but 720 has me a little nervous

Xs seems to have all the bells and whistles and easy to hold in the hand for the selfies the wife always asks me to take (her SE takes crap)

Xs Max seems great for those movies while in the air but for the 256 a $240/year increase from my current AUP payments.

Thoughts? Really struggling with this years... more than any other!

I hear your dilemma. And it's a tough one, I don't know if there is an real clear answer to
"I don't want to spend an arm and a leg." Because, well, I don't know if you can avoid that.
Guess it depends on the price of an arm and a leg? :)

You have to tally everything up, the phone, the watch. Tax, Do you want Apple Care for phone, watch...both?
Tack on some accessories. What is the grand total?

BUT...trade in the 8 Plus, if that is great condition...through Apple you'll get $400 back. The Watch trade in, I don't know if it's worth bothering, Apple offers $20-25 at the most, other trades in's at other stores..the original watches are almost worthless (Pretty sad I think.)

You may want to think right now, can you buy both and not take brutal hit to your bank acct. now?
If so...go for it. Maybe get the phone, wait on the Watch for a few months, OR get the watch, wait on the phone.
What is the device that you need ASAP. What can wait?

The phones - Camera, it's a slight improvement on the XS, XS Max. (The F-Stop depth of field fix feature, I have been using that on an app called "Focos" since last year - it actually does the same thing, maybe not as good as these new phones.) Apparently its "smarter" better low light. We'll see about that, the 8 Plus DOES have a better low light camera I think, not the best in all dark settings - same with any phone I think.

I think the biggest benefit for you, a true full screen on an 8 Plus sized phone as you travel...videos, Netflix, any movie watching will look amazing! The true colors and deep blacks of an OLED will enhance it.

So if you like the size of that 8 +, then I think you would love the XS Max. I look at my 8 + and see the black top, black bottom with the home...this will now be ALL screen and the thought of that is beautiful. That is exactly what I really wanted last year.

The 256gb, $1249 price, it's tough, I dont think anyone will say otherwise. If you are filling up that 64gb fast, maybe that is the best option.

I have the 8+, I love the looks of the XS Max so I will bite the bullet and get that.
And YES I love the AW4 also. I have a S0 AW also, but I will be waiting on it. I personally will be waiting on the watch..I have the 42mm, always wanted them to come out with a bigger size..great, now they did 44mm and a fuller screen (just add to my temptation Apple...thanks! lol!) BUT..I'll buy that later, looking at the XS Max.For me, 64gb has always been fine, I can stick with that.

Not sure if I helped. Just my thoughts on it.

X-series has essentially same screen as your Plus. The Max is bigger - recommend if watching stuff on it is your priority (seems it is?).

Why do you need to up your storage? 49GB taken is still enough space? Xr has 128GB tier btw, which will be cheaper.

Watch S4 is highly recommended.
