I receive SMS but can't send them

I use iOs 8 and Yosemite. I receive SMS from non iphone users on both my mac and my iPhone but I can't send SMS from my Mac to non iphone users.

Why ? My number is set as start conversation.

in the Message settings do you also have the same email address as a way to reach you on both iphone and mac?

for it to work properly you need both phone # and email on both devices
