I screwed up

I screwed up. in the effort try to install an older version pf xCode, I deleted the simulators for xCode10.1. went to App store try to install it again, but instead of download, the app store only give me one option, which says open. However the simulators are not reinstalled. So now I downloaded 10.1.1 from the developer's site. Xcode 1.1 xip, what is the different install it from the xip vs. from the app store?

Also how do I wip out clean the previous installed 10.1 before I re-installl the new one? Thanks.
