Define low life expectancy
The first iPhone had no 3G or GPS. In some ways, it was obsolete the moment it came out.
2) The iPhone v5 will be GSM with a CDMA variant to follow likely 3-6 months later. This seems the most likely to me as it would give the Verizon iPhone4 a decent sales lifetime of ~9months. Plus it would also set the stage for an iPhone v6 in the usual July timeframe likely introducing a dual mode chip. Actually, I think they would then likely just release an LTE variant at that point as the carries are supposedly migrating to it within that timeframe.
