I have an HP 900 series printer and I've reinstalled the drivers from HP numerous times and it is always the same...if I turn my computer on, I will have a small window where I will be able to print and then it will not work any longer (not even if I quit the Printer utilities or the HP Director (All-in-One) or even if I disconnect the cable in the computer and replug it in, or disconnect the cable in the printer and replug it in, or restart the printer, or do a mix/all of these things). The only option is to restart the computer.

It is a hassle to have to be rushing in the morning and go to print and have to wait (albeit not long, but wait nonetheless) for the computer to restart just so I can print.

Is there any way I can resolve this issue?

Thank you,

Clarke

there isn't an error message? open up console in the utility folder and try to print any error message their? try openning system profiler in the utility folder as well then click on USB. do you see your printer on the list? are you running any software that controlers any other devices on the usb port? what devices are on the usb port?

Usually just the printer. There's no error message, just a little red exclamation point in the dock icon. If I try to scan something it will say "Device not found" or something like that.

Answers to a few of the obvious questions?

- Tiger or Panther?
- CUPS printer driver, GIMPPrint driver, or non-standard?
- Connected directly via USB or Rendezvous/Bonjour or IP printing?

Clarke,

Are you using Fast User Switching? There is a known problem with the HP drivers and FUS. Turn it off and try it for a while. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

To mkrishnan's question:
Panther
don't know..it's from HP's website
direct via USB

To Detlev:
Why is this? I mean...I usually leave lots of programs open because it maeks it a lot easier than having to keeping logging out/in. Is there anyway to swith users with out having to log out and without needing to use FUS?

Try installing GIMPPrint (or getting Tiger, which I think annexes it)...the 900 series is on the supported list, and GIMPPrint ends up hooking into the standard CUPS route, and is more likely to have been written in a "nice" fashion. The issue seems to be, from Detlev's info, that HP wrote sloppy drivers for your printer.

GIMPPrint is an open source initiative to develop standards-based drivers for a lot of printers that can be used on any platform that uses CUPS (Linux, MacOS, some other *nixes).
