I still have to enter my password to download free apps...

I'm having the same problem. Do you have a credit card on file for your account? Because I don't and I was wondering if that was the problem for me.
I get prompted for both username and password and get rejected. Had to update apps through iTunes on my Macbook. No problem there. Some have suggested to do a backup and then restore. Did the backup but hesitant about the restore in case I lose some data (like calendar entries).
If you have never downloaded the app before
it will prompt for password.
If its a redownload it shouldn't.

It seems like it works for me when I update apps and even then it's only every once in a while that I don't have to put it in to update.
It's working normally. You only don't need the password for updates. Anything else still needs it.
