there's already an IRC channel that's been in use for years now...although nobody ever frequents it other than during events and when the forum is down...

If you generate enough interest, you could always use http://gabbly.com/macrumors.com.
Some people tried it... it was ok.

I do think incorporating a chat in to the forums is not a good idea. Transcripts would be needed to be able to search for a solution. And who likes to wade through chat transcripts for a sollution...

Then there comes the issue of moderating it. I have seen some of the threads here go down quick (the one about certain people not liking Katie's writing style), a chat has the potential to go down hill even quicker.

The irc has been quite for a while now so I don't see any form of chat taking off.

I suggested the same thing, and I got shot down.
We don't need a web based chat since we have a perfectly good IRC that is not really used. It is obvious that nobody here wants to chat since MRChat is always quite and nobody seems to care. If we really want to get a chat going it is best to advertise the IRC and get it active again.

Everything you guy said is understandable. I just wanted to put it out there for discussion. :p
