I shoot in RAW as a hobbyist not professional. I also run CAD programs (SW, Creo) in Parralells. So between these two I ask:

Is 2TB overkill?

I would but a 1TB if I was to order it....if that helps. So I am wondering if I should just go with the 2TB.

I got 4. But I do video. Look at your hard drive now and see how full it is. What would be advantageous to have on your mac that you currently have on externals.

2TB probably is overkill for most unless you absolutely must have everything with you at all times, and external storage isn't an option for whatever reason. Or you're working with outrageously large video files or something. I'm assuming if you were hurting for storage on a 1TB machine you'd know it already?

It would be for me since I have 512Gb on my 13" and rely heavily on iCloud. My point is that each of us have different needs. How much are you currently using ?

My general advice for anticipating future needs is that a new computer has at least double the storage space you currently use. Since people tend to collect data.

Ideal numbers for SSD is that you leave at least 20% to 25% free. For best performance and lower wear. 10% at a bare minimum. Therefore if you use 500GB right now. A 1TB SSD would mean you only have an additional 250GB of working space. If you want to stay within ideal SSD usage limits.

If most of that space used is from photos and videos you shot and you are using a lot of space already. You may want to go with triple or quadruple the capacity you are currently utilizing. As modern DSLR cameras and smartphones are much higher resolution than just a few years ago.

My recommendation would be to stick with 1TB, but 2TB isn’t a huge cost, so don’t feel compelled to worry about my opinion. I’d say in general people need to move storage off their laptops and keep only what they really need at any given time. There is just too much risk of a busted machine on a laptop that gets taken with you everywhere. Get NAS to sync to at home or work. Use the cloud or external hard drives. Get used to moving old projects off your laptop into some sort of more permanent storage at a regular frequency and have a back up for that too.

anyway, that’s how I deal with things and I find that despite working with big data sets, my 1TB laptop drive is never crowded.

And yeah, get that 32GB. You can always supplement you hard drive space, no way to do that with RAM outside internet connections to compute solutions.

I see you're kind of new here...could you add all your what if questions to a single thread?

You're all over the place with your thoughts...

I did order 2TB, but after a long dilemma (long=24hrs of agony :) ). I currently come from a 2014 MBP with 16GB RAM and 512GB. How much is free on my current machine? About 132GB. So does that mean I am ok with 1TB (which is the "new 512GB")? I didnt think so. Here's why:

1. I have a lot of footage on an external SSD, which never gets processed because it is on an external drive :). I'd much rather have then internal.
2. I can really only work on 1 video project due to space constraints. I do 3-4 video projects each year (personal trips) and prefer to keep em all internal (w/ an external for backup-only).
3. I use OneDrive (1TB plan) and would like to have a lot of those files locally available as well. I travel 2-3 times a year internationally and internet isnt as fast everywhere. Plus, I get to do some creative work while in the air.
4. Love to keep logicPro samples locally.
5. VMs - at least 1-2 Linux ones, and a Windows one. Thru parallels.
6. Option to do bootcamp with decent space (256GB at least) dedicated to Windows partition.

So yeah, once I did the math I realized 1TB was limiting, considering I plan to keep this machine for 5years at least - same length I have kept my 2014 MBP (which is still going strong). 2TB was the minimum. I eyed 4TB for a little bit but just couldnt justify the cost (I was already breaking north of 4.4K which is more than my original budget).

Whats the opinion on the better value..the base 512 or the base 1TB with upgrades?
