Quick background: Upgraded my 2010 iMac from a 500GB to 2TB hard disk a year or so ago. New hard disk died earlier this year. Bought new hard disk. Forgot about thermal cable BS and got different brand. Put original hard disk in. Out of storage space so bought $40 thermal cable from OWC.

Well, after all that I just tried to replace the hard disk. I think I did that. But I know when I opened the iMac, the DisplayPort cable came out quite easily as I was taking the display out of the computer and unhooking the cables. Like it kinda just popped out. So I did the replacement and got to putting the cables back in. Darn display cable was tough to go in. The pins are so tiny, but I think I could actually see where it had either broken off on an edge or been just worn off by putting too much pressure on it. I couldn't tell for sure because it's so small. I think I got it situated in, but the locking mechanism with the tab doesn't really lock.

So I tried putting everything back together and turning the computer on. I got the old "BONNNGGGG" sound a Mac makes when it starts, but zero video either with holding option or without. Opened computer, tried to get display cable in again. Same issue.

So it seems to me that I have messed this up. I have messed something up the last couple of times since I forgot about the thermal cable variance between Seagate and WD last time. Now I may have effed up that cable and possibly the port since who knows if there's a chunk of plug in there.

Ugh.

I was going to order a new cable when I found it for $19. But then the shipping was also $19. And when I did a quick check on the place to see whether it was a good place -- it's called macpalace.com -- I saw a thread on here with people discussing applepalace.com. Not sure if it was the same place or not, but a few people said it was a scam. OWC doesn't seem to sell this darn thing. Only ones I can find through Amazon are selling them for like $60. This is a mid-2010 iMac, so HELL NO.

I'd appreciate any advice. I like the iMac and it's been good aside from the replacement hard disk lasting about a year (thanks, Seagate!). I know if I take it to Apple or the authorized store nearby it'll cost at least $100 to replace it, and again it's a 5-year-old computer. I mainly use it for serving video to my Apple TVs, and I just don't want to sink a lot of cash into it. So again, thanks for any advice.
