Ironic, but literally 20 minutes before I got home and got my 4S, my 3G seemed to die. It seemed to be turned off (I didn't turn it off) so I tried to re-boot and nothing. So I figured the battery ran out, so I put a charger on it for more than an hour, but I still can't turn it on.

So, I'm assuming it died.

Do you think the battery itself failed? Noting bad happened to it (I didn't drop it or anything).

Is this something I can fix? How can I find out what's wrong?

Press and hold power button and home button at the same time for about 10 to 15 seconds, then release both and turn the phone on normally. Let see what happen.

I wanted to give it to my mother to use as an ipod touch.

Do you think it could be the battery? Can they be replaced?

No, even if battery is dead, you still can get response from the phone when plug in. So, there are few things could go wrong.

1. Some how, the dock connector is failing hence you will not get any response from plugging in, at the same time battery is out of juice.
2. logic board is toast.

If you have another Iphone 3G laying around, you can open both and test each component by swapping them.

Thank you - If I take it to an apple store, will they take a look at it?

It is 3G, nothing they can do.

What you can do is to look at your local craigslist. There should be plenty of ads about Iphones's fixing. Take to one of them for estimation. Don't pay anything until they give you the cost and guarantee it will work again.
