Just unpacked and setup an 11” M4 iPad Pro 1TB w/Cellular new from Amazon to replace the 256GB WiFi only version going back to Costco tomorrow. I wasn’t sure I would keep the iPad when I bought it in March and with their 90 day return policy I thought I would try the cheapest model. (It wasn’t enough… well, it was and wasn’t.)

The new Tandem OLED screen is unbelievably good. The storage was not adequate with how I use devices (1TB on my phones since it was an option) and I thought I would go for the cellular model with the better chip and extra RAM while I was at it.

As soon as I turned on the new iPad I could tell something was off even with the low brightness with no access to change it until setup was complete.

Once I was able to match brightness, ensure true tone was turned off (all the usually stuff), the difference between these 2 screen is insane to me.

Let me first provide context... my first mobile Apple device was the iPhone 3G in 2008. I’ve gotten a new phone almost every year since so I have been through all the screen issues, glue, yellowing, yada yada. I have had dozens of replacement units side by side for one reason or another(broken phone, new phone to replace battery, and more) and seen all the white point variances between the old and new device, etc.

This was worse… The almost twice as expensive cellular 1TB M4 iPad Pro has CRAZY greenish, yellow tint and is MUCH less sharp. Like so much less depth, detail and sharpness on any image let alone viewing font. That’s what is killing me the most after I enabled Color Filters in Accessibility (while leaving it off on the 256GB M4 I have had for 2 months) and made the color much less warm and cooler than the 256GB (which should make things sharper to the human eye and the warmer iPad appear blurrier).

It did not impact the sharpness or improved detail seen on the 256GB M4 iPad Pro. I am upset. I know, given enough time I won’t notice as much (especially a color difference except when side by side… but HELL it looks bad displaying the same content as my 16” M2 MAX MBP, so the color accuracy is terrible to anyone that knows proper formatted displays and content) Beyond the color, I don’t see the sharpness getting better or less noticeable. The difference in sharpness between the $1799 model with the $999 is just infuriating. Mostly because I hate going through returns (to Amazon) replacements from apple and proving it to someone with less experience… ugh. Just depressed at this point.

Like the depth and detail differences is just as noticeable or more than the color variance. Text/font looks awful on my new 1TB model when compared to the 2 month old(of use rather) 256GB model.

I really was hoping I was done with screen issues and clearly getting panels outside the acceptable tolerances in flagship, latest devices from Apple in 2025…

Went to Apple. Tech and manager said it was the worst they ever saw. The color AND the sharpness was immediately apparent.

Literally said the system would not let them replace it. Like, it was not an option with that issue despite multiple Apple employees agreeing it was crazy and worse that anything they had seen. They said the only option at the store was to take the iPad and send it off for "repair" for a new screen. No option to replace outright.

They said to call/IM(chat) Apple support and see if they could send a replacement for me to then send the problem unit back. Haven't had a chance to do that. Will try tonight.

If that doesn't work, I will return/exchange through Amazon.

Honestly....I would return to Amazon and not struggle with the repair cycle. Return, wait a few days and order another one, only get this one from Apple. As much as I dislike paying for Apple Care, this is exactly why I do purchase Apple Care.

Well, Apple would send me a replacement with a $2,000 hold...

But after talking to Amazon and the rep asked if I would be ok with a return(I said "no," I wanted an exchange). They sent me to a supervisor who sent me a replacement for free tomorrow and a return label... since I spend a fortune on Amazon it seems... lol.

If only I wasn't getting on a plane at 2pm, likely before it arrives... Oh well. sticking with my 256 GB for this short business trip.

Fingers crossed this second one is good.

Not bad if Amazon worked that well for you, I have had good luck with the few returns I have made to Amazon. In cases like yours, I try to find a different source for the second item due to the possibility that a batch of bad screens were used in a order destined for Amazon. I know that is not always the case, but it is a unfounded fear of mine. :)

The harsh reality is no price point shields you from panel lottery

OLED isn’t a silver bullet either

It sucks but screens aren’t a binary it works perfect or not at all thing. It’s a full spectrum of hurdles
