I recently downloaded a driver update from NiVDIA in order to have CUDA support in Adobe PP and Adobe AE.

I thought driver updates weren't needed on OSX?

Why shouldn't they?
Driver updates are just as needed as on Windows. Only difference is there usually are none. I guess some come stealthy with the 10.X.Y updates but generally they just don't show. Kind of like with Windows notebooks when they deliver one driver at launch and maybe one update if there are serious bugs but all new drivers you need to hack to get installed.

Driver updates happen, they're just included in Apple updates.

The difference between the mac and the pc in that regard is that you don't need to go hunting driver updates from a third party.

They still happen though.

I wish OS X has more frequent updates.

You'll find with many GPU intensive applications that performance is better in Windows than in OS X due to better drivers.
