It is free

You still need to be logged in to the account that you "purchased" this free "app" from

What account? AppleID? I never purchased anything. iCloud account?im already logged into the Mac App Store so it shouldn't be asking me for anything.

It appears I misunderstood your problem. I don't know why it's happening to you.

What version of OSX are you currently running?

How many Apple IDs do you have? You made it sound like you believe the Apple ID and iCloud accounts are different?

There are two Apple ID usually. An iCloud email address for device syncing and another email for store IDs logins that you've had for years.

That is unless you are a recent Mac buyer and did everything with one single ID because you bought after iCloud was introduced.

I'm on 10.8.5

I've been using the same Apple ID since I bought my first music on iTunes in 2004. It's the same ID for all my App Store purchase and iCloud.

If you bought a used Mac, the OS might be registered under the previous owner's Apple ID.

Yeah me too. Same ID all this time since they had IDs. Several devices and desktops using it. But I also created an iCloud address. It's attached to the same ID. Also when you sign up for iCloud (on a device) you are forced to create an iCloud address. At least I was.

I'm signed in right now on a new Mac mini. Shouldn't have this message.

wow.. I had to delete the "Install OSX Mavericks" dmg image from my Mac. Now it works.
