That is even more ugly than the notch we got. I was also hoping for some more usage than a simple line you swipe up. You can actually swipe left and right but that’s it.

If you thought iOS 11 was a big redesign just wait for 12. They will have to rethink alot of things after people start using the iPhone X and starts complaining.
 
Personally I'm glad there isn't a touch bar. I think that would reduce the benefit as, even though the screen would be bigger, the display wouldn't be in real terms.

A touch bar wouldn't work in landscape mode, either (it would consume too much space in real terms) so if you have to be bar-free in landscape it makes sense to be bar-free all the time - only one new control paradigm to learn.
