I took a depth breath and updated to ios 6 with no way back

Why? Works fine for me--and pretty much everyone else.
Surely you're being cynical with this question as their are pages and pages of iOS6 complaints and not just maps!

No not cynical--probably shouldn't have used the word everyone--just those around me who I have talked to--and none of them have any problems. I was just amazed at how easy the update to my 4S went yesterday using wi-fi--so I will just leave it at me being very happy with the update.
