Yep, traded in both of them. I did this at an Apple Store to get credit all at once as well as avoid any shenanigans when inspecting something that gets mailed in.

How does it work?

It works best to do the phone as the trade-in and the other unit, like my Ultra 2, traded-in for a gift card.

Today, Oct 05 2024, the 14PM was valued at $500 and the Ultra 2 gift card was $365. I'm sure I could have gotten more for each unit online somewhere but the ease of mind and ease of process was easily worth whatever difference might be involved.

The trade was applied directly and then the gift card was applied as a one-time payment at time of transaction and the remainder, $434.00 was Apple Card financed (fixed at 2 years). The sales tax was fully collected at time of transaction and not part of the financing.

I intentionally went with the Unlocked option vs taking a carrier offer, to avoid all the strings attached there.

Porting the number over was easy and quick, right there in store (I'm on ATT). ATT did charge me $35 for upgrading. That was irritating but nothing Apple could do anything about, strictly ATT related.

As far as the Ultra 2 goes; great watch, perfect really. I bought it thinking I would fall in love with it but that just didn't happen. I like my simple mechanicals and simple Casios lol, go figure.

Items to note:
  • Have your icloud backup done
  • Have anything car related handled. I keep my Tesla key card in my wallet as a backup so I didn't stress over this one.
  • Take care of any Authenticator logins / codes beforehand. I didn't and had to go into backup codes and all that for some websites and accounts lol

Everything else was in my icloud backup.

Overall, totally smooth process.

Yea I prefer them to do the inspection in person. The apple store is 5 minutes from my house so honestly a no-brainer plus Apple in-store service is impeccable and seamless. For my 11 Pro Max prior to trading up to 16 Pro Max.
Reason I traded in my 11 Pro Max [ 5 years old ] , nobody ain't buying it but has a faulty faceID && white bar on the right side of screen [nobody ain't buying that 101%]

However I did a mistake when preparing it for trade in and that's fully wiping/resetting the phone. All they want you to do is remove FindMy/iCloud link on the phone and they'll prompt you in for reset.

Batt Capacity was 75% after 5 years... Trade in potential value was 300$ for 256GB [AUD], managed to get 200$. 100$ loss vs doing a 200$ repair on the same phone in the shop to keep it good condition.. i'll take that. Plus over 5 years the phone was valued roughly around 429$/year so not too bad. Went for a 16 Pro Max = holy sh*t game changer. Battery Life, Pro Motion, Cameras Smarter/quicker, Faster FaceID, Faster Everything. USB-C, external recording to ssd and transfer externally - something i've been asking for a lot... [no need to upgrade internal storage anymore woohoo]

Only made sense to feel that difference if you hold your devices for long which I suspect I'm going to do [3-4 years minimum]. Anyone who is expecting a YoY diff is just plain dumb and trading it is throwing most of the $$ away imho. These phones are beyond superior now, definitely a massive leap...

Would only sting those who trade in year over year [huh] or two yearly... I feel these phones can hold up pretty pretty long now. 5 years was a stretch for the 11 Pro Max. I'd say 4 years is a safe bet.

If the phone is a year old better to sell after-market imho, trade in ONLY works if the phone is really old and there's zero chance of reselling on the aftermarket. I know yes you might be able to pinch extra money but it's not worth the hassle when people haggle tf out of you for more discounts and then nit pick everything. Plus even if I were looking for a new phone I just buy brand new and keep it for life until the trade in happens on that day when I let it go.

Still have my 8 Plus however haha!!! Near no trade in value but functions fine as a little gaming console.

Used to sh**t on apple trade in being dumb, but after having a good look it only makes sense if the device is really old [eg more than 2-3+ years]... where the resale value definitely has gone down over the years. Rethinking now.

I suppose as long as you’re happy that’s all that really matters, but gotta be honest
this sounds like a terrible deal.

I went from the 13 PM to the 16 PM and that feels incredibly incremental, and in some ways there are things I like less about the new phone.

The 16 Pro just isn’t enough of an upgrade over the 14 PM to justify changing phones, and then having to throw in an Ultra 2?

I got $1000 alone just from a carrier promo on my 13 PM.

Yea trading in the ultra 2 is dumb imho, that watch can go very very very very very very very long with that kind of battery life [and even more if low power mode is on which i use, to double it cos i don't need it to be on all the time but just track my steps/heart rate and some sleep pattern]... assuming thats 350usd trade in after not even a year out? Holy sh*t. that's a 60% loss.
The Ultra 2 costs me 1400AUD here. that's 877usd. I'd wager the Ultra 2 can easily hold out 6 years plus. Which is a much more sustainable product than the new Series 9/10 etc.

Thanks to credit card providers [free gift card redemptions], my 16 Pro Max was only 1000aud out of pocket. Which is a no brainer and why I skipped all the other 3 models. Sure one can 'save some money' but pro max is longetivity king... and it does show, can get 36-48 hrs on low power mode [which is still decent] before needing to recharge which is stupid asf [couldnt get a day out of previous iphones]

The Ultra 2 was a great watch but no regrets letting it go. Again, just never fell in love with it.

The reason I went ahead with a change from 14PM to 16Pro is that I discovered the Max size just isn't for me. I almost did a trade in when the 15 Pro was released.

If anything I should have stayed with my 11 Pro and then traded for the 15 Pro.

same lol i saw the 15 Pro Max came out, and i was like external storage recording and transfer//usb-c i nearly pulled in quick but decided to wait.

16 pro max fixes a lot of 15 pro max issues [overheating and battery life and low power mode]... now low power mode is actually desirable/usable in 16 Pro max extending the battery by 2x. [that said 16 Pro [not max] also got significant battery boost so now it's actually a great option]
