I picked one up off craigslist for $20 bucks and used it with a Note 5. I could not keep the note in, it would fall out so I had to stop but it was pretty cool. I dont think it is ready yet but I can see the potential. The pixels were distracting and everything was blurry unless it was something I was focusing on. I tried the 3d art demo and the Jurassic Park demo, as well as looking at some 360 degree photos.

Did you pick up the first gen (white and gray) or second gen (dark blue / grey)? I got the second gen last week from Samsung and it's been pretty good. I don't have a Note 5 to test out, but the S7 edge is fine.

If you were streaming 360 content, then the quality sucks. You got to download those for good quality.

Odd, I couldn't make my Note 5 fall out of the Gear VR even if I shook it around, maybe the locking mechanism was faulty. I agree it's pretty blurry, but it's a pretty awesome experience. Especially since it's untethered.

It still shouldn't be falling out. I've never used the plastic piece, plus it gets in the way of using the pass through camera view. You probably have the developer edition, that was made for the Note 4. It looks very similar to the consumer edition which was made for the smaller phones like the S6/S6 edge and models after that.

The box says compatible with Note5-S7Edge

Then it shouldn't fall out. Unless the craigslist seller put the developer edition in the consumer box. You should search online for the slight differences between the two to verify which one you have.

There is a small clip on the opposite side of the power/data connector, it's smooth plastic. When you put the phone in, it should have a click that it's engaged. It keeps the phone from falling out. I found that if you didn't fully engage that clip the phone could fall out.
