I tunes crashes when attempting to add songs to iphone

I have the 3g and everytime I connect it I say 'dont transfer" and then it syncs music and gets to about 29/400 and crashes. So I shortened the list to just 1 and it worked. I dont want to manually add one everytime I sync so what is the problem? Im not even using this as a phone(it was a gift from an iphone 4 upgrader) and I just want to listen to music. Help lease and thanks/
