I used my ipod to listen through my Macbook, got home and all my songs are gone??

Hard to get it all in the title but.....

I have 2 libraries one external (the big one) I use at home with my MBP

The other is the portable on I use on the road with my MBP and is on the HD

I wanted to hear some other music so I switched the ipod to manage manually and was able to hear all my pod music on my laptop Sweeet! So I thought

I just got home, plugged into my external and started seeing those exclamation points by a bunch of my music. I navigated to my external and sure enough those songs are Gone! A bunch of em. Where'd they go?

What did I do wrong, and how can I get em back?
