I wanna record somethings from my ipod to the mac

I know in imovie that you can record . And theres a option to record with input . So i got a cord and connected from my ipod to the mac and i tried recording from the beat maker app . I wanna record my recording on my mac but it wouldnt let me . What should i do to record from my ipod to mac?

Huh , i did use an audio cable but no luck .

Check in System Preferences: Sound, that the audio input is the line in and not the internal microphone.

Still nothing . Maybe bc my audio cables arent ment for recording . But idk still not recording .
