I think the Dock is hardwired into OS X. You cannot make it go away totally. But you can hide it.

Launchpad replacing the dock? It has so many problems and a lack of vital features. I'll start using launchpad when I can delete any app from launchpad but even then, there's no way I'll give up the dock.
