I want to FileVault external drives without wiping them ...

Hi all

I've FileVaulted my internal disk. Under Lion this is a really simple background operation - it's great.

I also want to FileVault 4TB of external FW800 drives, but it seems the only way to do that is with Disk Utility while wiping them.

But I obviously can't wipe all my data, and really don't want to buy a new enclosure & shuffle all the data onto new, FileVaulted disks.

Is there any way around this? Ideally I'd like to do something similar to what I did with the internal disk - just enable FileVault & let it do its thing in the background ...

Make sure you have everything essential backed up, then search the forums and web for "diskutil coreStorage convert".
