I want to purchase an iMac, but here's the thing...

I really do not want to lose my contacts and photos if I sync my phone to it. I currently own an HP laptop. Is there a way around this?

Yeah, just transfer the stuff to your new iMac first (adressbook and iPhoto). You can do this manually or use the migration assistant on your iMac. (i would recommend manual since there have been some problems when using migration assistant from windows to mac).
