Carrier I want to return my Verizon iPhone that has device monthly payments while keeping my phone serviceon

On my older iPhone. I bought the iPhone 8+ 2 days ago and I was wondering what would happen when I return it and if I would get to keep my upgrade eligibility still after returning it. I got it from the Verizon Store.
I plan on putting my service on my old phone again before returning the one that I got from Verizon Store with device payment plan that I got from my upgrade. I need help on what will happen to my upgrade eligibility after returning the phone. I plan on waiting for the iPhone X Plus instead. And I am not worried about the restocking fee.
I just don't want to get involved in a nightmare.

Yes you can return the phone and pay the $35 restocking fee then you’ll have an upgrade available. Since you won’t owe anything.
