so am I limited to 10.11? since my early 2009 iMac (*g ram, 640gHD)will not support 10.12.

From reading the 10.11 threads, I think, if the above answer is yes, I will stay with 10.8. Or is 10.10, 10.9 still available somewhere?

And personally, I love 10.11 El Capitan. Still a worthwhile update from 10.8.

I must say this is one of the few positive post I've read regarding 10.11. Think I would be satisfied but there's so many negative post about .11, I'm apprehensive.

Personally I haven't been able to find any reason to complain about 10.11. Performance has been great, no glitches have happened on my 2006 Mac Pro. It's been smooth. I've had no problems at all. Revived my aging Mac and feel good for many more years to come.
