Not too long ago I could text my wife something like "Happy New Year," then before tapping "Send" I would choose the fireworks emoji, tap and hold the "Send" arrow to access the window showing "Screen" and "Bubble boxes," and then I would tap the Send arrow. My wife would receive a text with a loud fireworks display. We could do this using balloons too, regardless if using data plus Wi-Fi or not.

But for the past few months this feature no longer works. I tried it using data on both iPhones, but the recipient receives the text plus a note indicating, "sent with echo," but the fireworks or balloons aren't received nor shown with sound. We don't text using iMessage (blue screen), just MMS. In Both iPhones iMessage is turned off.

I have also noticed that in the "Messages" settings, there was a setting for other than "MMS" texting that is not longer available in the recent iOS upgrades. Maybe that's where the problems is, or maybe the problem is with the carrier?

These are iMessage features.
But the feature was available before the last upgrades. While my wife and I don't use data (we keep data turned off unless texting photos or something like that), we could text the fireworks and balloons with echo. Now using data or not it does not work, so I am assuming that Apple has done something different with recent iOS upgrades.

By the way, I am not referring to texting any of the emojis, just the ones that automatically appear by the keyboard when one types, "Happy New Year", or "Happy Birthday." On the first one the fireworks emoji appears, and also the balloons of the second (birthday). We could send either one of the two back and forth, with echo, regardless if having the data turned on or off.

Your memory is mistaken. This has always been a feature of iMessage. It’s not now or ever has been available with ordinary texting.

You are correct. Please accept my apology.

I wonder how come it is not working after the last iOS upgrade?
