i7 Macbook Pro Not Recognizing External Monitor

I am trying yo plug my NEC EA231WMi into my MBP via DVI and a DVI to mini displayport adaptor and the computer is not recognizing the monitor. It does nothing when I plug the monitor in. Any ideas what the problem could be?
 
Hi, do you have gfxcardstatus installed? If yes, switch it to nvidia only or dynamic switching. If it is set to intel only it doesn't recognize the external monitor. Good luck !! :)
