Hello, title says it all.

I have a 2.66 GHz i7 15.4" Hi-Res 8GB Ram w/ 240GB OWC X SSD.

I am tired of deleting stuff to make room on my small SSD.

I am looking to buy an external hard drive that I can store all my movies, audio, and program install files.

I want my purchase to be smart and not something that will be out-dated soon.

I was looking at USB 3.0 because the Lacie thunderbolt model doesnt come out until Summer and my laptop does not have thunderbolt, nor does it have an expresscard slot.

This made me think that I should buy the USB 3.0 HD just because it would work for a few years with new technology as well.

I have heard good things about Lacie, here is the USB 3.0 2TB harddrive im refering to:

Please tell me what you think, suggestions, comments , anything!!

First off I would not waste money on a USB 3.0 HD because even if Apple begins to use that technology they are going to push Thunderbolt as the de-facto standard for high-bandwidth connections (hard to argue with sustained 900MB/sec performance). If you plan on using this with a mac only I would look at something like: http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=11271 (its bus powered no power adapter needed).

See: http://www.crunchgear.com/2010/02/05/esata-is-faster-than-usb-3-0-at-least-right-now/

Cheers

If USB 3.0 model is only few bucks more, then definitely grab that. However, I wouldn't pay much more than 10$ more for the USB 3.0 if your computer does not have it. Like noted by the poster above, I would also recommend a 2.5" external since it requires no external PSU. Ext PSU isn't a problem with a desktop but it can get annoying with a laptop if you want to lay on bed and use the external for instance.
