This was a quite surreal ad while I was reading about a plane crash.

I don't think that could ever happen. The nose of the one plane is outside of the app's display box. iPhone apps when run in the 2X mode do not show anything outside of their screen's.

It's a real ad. I got it in the BBC.app. However, it's not an iAd and appeared after an application update (so it's likely FedEx sponsored the app for a period of time).
