First of all, I apologize if this is a repost, though I haven't found anything else about this. I'm also not entirely sure what caused my problem. I am running a 14 inch iBook 1.33 GHz G4. I use an Olympus digital camera on a regular basis, and it takes superb 640x480 30fps MP4 videos (with 44kHz sound at that). I have used my iBook and iMovie to download and edit the videos since I got it. When I installed 10.4 Tiger, I was quite pleased to find that video performance had not changed; however, that is no longer the case. I am not entirely sure if this started when I installed the Apple Intermediate Codec or the 10.4.1 upgrade (unfortunately I didn't play any videos between the updates), but now Quicktime 7 performance when playing MP4 videos is unacceptable. It quite often stutters and sometimes takes a half second to start playing upon pressing play. The sound track is often out of sync with the video now as well. I can't imagine why this would have anything to do with it, but I've also noticed that the smooth animated full screen transition where the Quicktime 7 window swells up to engulf the entire screen is also not quite what it used to be. Now the screen simply goes dark for a split second and then the video appears full screen. VLC still plays the videos without a hitch, which makes me think this may have more to do with the Intermediate Codec update than the 10.4.1 update. Just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this. I would much rather use Quicktime Pro than VLC.
