Hi everyone,

I have two iBooks: one from 2004 and another from 2005. The 2004 model has a GPU failure—it shows vertical lines and other artifacts when it heats up in games. I've read that this is a common problem with the AMD 9200 GPU in these models, and there's no effective fix for it.

My 2005 iBook has an ATI Radeon 9550 GPU and works great so far. My question is, does the 2005 iBook have a known GPU reliability issue, or is it generally free from the problems that plagued the 2004 model?

I've never heard of the 9200s having issues. It's the 7500 in the white G3's that were problematic.
Granted any computer has the potential of failure. But iBook G4s have a pretty good reputation.

Yes, I have a number of iBook G3's with failed GPUs that I keep as spares/donor machines. You can find droves on eBay for this purpose.

Agreed. Neither of mine have exhibited any GPU issues.

Thanks, maybe I misread and all the threads were about the G3 model. My specific model with the 9200 might have had an exceptional issue.

Anyway, it looks like my iBook from 2005 is perfectly safe! :)
