The CDROM on my iBook 500 has recently craped out. I bought a replacement, however it is not overtly clear how to replace it. Can anyone offer any suggestions? I have read that it takes 40+ screws to get the old one out, is this correct? Has anyone had any experience dealing with this?

I've done this about 7 times and it still sucks. I just replaced the power adapter plug an a 466 iBook for someone this weekend and was reminded of how many screws it takes, and worse, the plastic snaps that need to be pryed along the way.
I'll try to find you a site that tells you how to do it and post it later.
*You have to be particularly careful with the keyboard and trackpad ribbons on both versions of iBooks.

Fun, fun, fun...

Thanks for the reply,

Do you happen to know the size/type of screw driver that is required to get those six sided screws on the on bottom off?

It's a torx 8. Get a good brand. The cheap computer toolkits bring this size but they usually don't fit becuase of bad manufacturing.
Sear's should have one. Or get a god one at a computer store.
