As a budding musician (well.. I like to make noises with my guitar!) the prospect of using Garageband seems too good to miss. However, i was wondering if there was any way of using Garageband on an iBook short of getting the m-audio interface?

or is it worth me forking out the extra for a 12" powerbook, which i am loathe to do despite the fact that i could get the student discount, and therefore obtaining a line-in and a faster computer?

A Powerbook would do a better job at GB than an iBook

Which iBook do you have? If its the G4 model you might be able to manage but if your still using a G3 then you won't be able to do alot of live recording etc, thats the case with my iBook :(

clockspeed matters here

The clock speed matters most in GB, so you would be nearly equal with a 14" ibook in garageband performance. Definitely use a g4 processor.
