iBook battery display after 10.2.8 update

After updating my iBook 500 MHz to 10.2.8 the battery status icon does not work correctly any more under battery. When I select "Show Time" it always displays "Calculating". When I select "Show Percent" it displays a value between 90-100%. After about 3 hours the computer falls asleep and I need the adaptor to wake it up. The battery is pretty new.
how can I fix this?

Which 10.2.8 update? The first one or the most recent one?
The first update did some dodgy stuff to battery menus apparently.
You could try resetting the power management unit: Shut down computer, remove battery, remove power supply, hold down reset button (next to headphone socket) for about 5 seconds, reconnect battery and power and start up again.

I tried this, but without success. I installed the 10.2.8 Build 6R73 update which is the most recent.
