iBook battery problems

Ever since I downloaded and installed the OS X battery update, the battery on my dual USB 600 mHz iBook has been running out of charge VERY quickly. Does anyone know what the problem is, or could it just be that my battery is getting old (about 27 months), and that it is just a coincidence that it should happen at about the same time as the battery update?
