iBook boot up from external harddrive

FYI - Im typing from an iPhone.

No harddrive, won't boot from external FireWire drive..
I've tried all key combos; any help?
 
With no internal hard drive present or not working properly, booting from a FW drive should be automatic. Do you have the software on CD that you can boot from? Did you try holding down the option key at startup to view all available startup disks?
