ibook broken? help

i have a ibook with a problem it takes a long time to boot to login screen about 5 minutes
then i input my password it takes even more time then it goes to just the generic blue background(no menus or icons etc.) for about 5 more minutes before going to the console(black screen white text)

any ideas on how to fix the problem

not yet
by the way when it is in the console thing it says disk0s3: io error

so it this a dead hard drive?

Try booting from the OS X install disk and going to Disk Utility and repairing the disk.
