i have a 1.42 ibook that i think has a bad fan? i ran a hardware test and never heard it turn on. dont think i feel any air flow but idk how quiet apple made these or what their fan curve was.

if im not feeling/hearing it, safe bet to just buy a new one and swap it?

also i have debian installed but grub fails to function. is this os something i need to manually direct open firmware towards to boot off that partition?

Best way to find out about the fan is to take a look. It will always be turning when power is on.
You will have to remove the bottom cover, and the internal shield to see the fan. You would want to look for any bits of trash/dust/etc, that might be interfering with the fan. You should be able to easily turn the fan blade with power off. Again, you have to remove the iBook bottom cover and internal shield to do any checking.
